Since its inception, Izvestia has been performing an important function – the newspaper was the official information source of the Soviet government, on its pages the decrees «On Peace» and «On Land» appeared for the first time. In addition, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Maxim Gorky, Mikhail Zoshchenko, Alexander Tvardovsky, Konstantin Simonov, Vasily Shukshin, Valentin Rasputin, Andrei Voznesensky, Robert Rozhdestvensky and many others have been published in different years on the pages of the daily.

Working on the update of Izvestia, we analyzed a huge number of samples of Russian and foreign press. In solving the problem, we relied both on modern trends and on classical techniques of the newspaper design, but first of all we tried to take into account the unique character and traditions of the publication.

One of the important changes was the change of format: following the new positioning, the newspaper became wider and “more respectable”. In addition to the format, changes were made to the structure of submission of the materials, the layout rules, the font scheme and the color scheme.

The logo of “Izvestia” remained practically unchanged for several decades, so the creative team of Depot WPF considered it to be unacceptable to change it radically. With full preservation of recognition, it was made more friendly, the leveling of the excessive “tartness” of the letters: the serifs became less sharp, graphic was strengthened, and the finishing strokes became straight.

It was decided to abandon the blue color that prevailed earlier in the design of the newspaper, in favor of noble beige, purple-gray and deep red. The same color scheme form the basis of the corporate identity of Izvestia.
Style elements and pictograms

The style elements developed by the Depot WPF team for Izvestia send us to the online stylistics: the dominant form – a rectangle – resembles buttons on sites, and the colored badges work as the content headers. Attention to these elements attract frames. The proprietary deep red color, in which the graphics are painted, allows you to place the accents correctly.
The given style of graphics develops in pictograms, which can be used in the infographic that is published in the newspaper, and in the identity – from the design of interiors to business documents.
